Robert Ricks has sent in this recollection of Richard;

I first came to Othona Bradwell on Sea in 1981 on a Summer Saturday. Douglas Bean brought me. At that stage I knew nothing of Richard Mulkern but I have been able to draw on my memories of that first visit to piece together the role which Richard played in the history and life of the Community. I remember Douglas saying that Richard thought about the future and planned for it whereas most other people on committees were trying to get through the day.

We are sad to announce the death of Richard Mulkern. Richard met Norman through the Navestock Connection in the 60’s and with his wife Trish became active members of the Community. He soon got involved on various committees and it was Richard who along with a number of others made sure that the Community continued to survive after Normans death in 1980. Through an immense amount of time, effort and devotion they ensured that there was a summer season in 1981. Last week we held an open discussion meeting in the spirit of the original Answer Back Meetings that Norman held, for those attending Malcolm's week on Think Globally, Acting Locally. Our Warden, Tim, gave an update of the year so far and the floor was open for all those attending to ask questions. If you are interested to hear what happened, the minutes from this meeting are available in the attached link. We plan to hold more of these meetings over the summer so please bring along any questions you will be staying here.

We are searching for a new Community Secretary for the Othona Community. The role includes assisting the Othona Trustee Board with the organisation of the AGM and being in communication with the Charity Commission, Othona Trustees and the individual centres. Local Artist, Sandy Sykes, is curating this year's Masters Relief Exhibition, which is dedicated to relief printmaking. The Masters is a series of technique-specific exhibitions established by the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. Any work using a relief printmaking technique as the primary medium is eligble. This includes woodcut, linocut, wood engraving, relief etching and block press. An exhibition of the selected works will be shown at Bankside Gallery from 13-24 November 2019. Details of how to enter are shown on the competition flyer. It would be great to have some work submitted by community members.

The itinenary for this week (20-25th July) of local based activties run by Roo and Dave Bull is available on our website. Included in the week are trips to Maldon, Burnham-on-Crouch and a day focusing on energy plus a chance to have a go at the very popular bottle rocket launching.
