We are sad to announce the death of Gillian Macklow. Gillian was introduced to Othona in 1971 by her uncle, Graham Whibley, who was a friend of Norman Motley. Gill loved Othona and brought all her children and grandchildren over the years. She remained an active Community member, visiting for the last time in the summer of 2018.

Gill will be remembered by Othona as a gentle and kind soul, a diligent Community member and an excellent bread baker. She loved the opportunities for worship, fellowship, music and nature that Othona offered, and she will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Gill is survived by her husband Chris, her four children, Jerry, Marcus, Alex and Kate and her three grandsons, Daniel, William and Archie.

Gillian’s Memorial Service will be held at... Read More

Robert Ricks has sent in this recollection of Richard;

I first came to Othona Bradwell on Sea in 1981 on a Summer Saturday. Douglas Bean brought me. At that stage I knew nothing of Richard Mulkern but I have been able to draw on my memories of that first visit to piece together the role which Richard played in the history and life of the Community. I remember Douglas saying that Richard thought about the future and planned for it whereas most other people on committees were trying to get through the day.

Richard's real contribution was to help the Community grow over the difficult period following Norman Motley's... Read More

We are sad to announce the death of Richard Mulkern. Richard met Norman through the Navestock Connection in the 60’s and with his wife Trish became active members of the Community. He soon got involved on various committees and it was Richard who along with a number of others made sure that the Community continued to survive after Normans death in 1980. Through an immense amount of time, effort and devotion they ensured that there was a summer season in 1981. He developed the weekly helpers teams which kept the community going until the 90’s when we installed a permanent warden and with the new building began to open all year. To both Richard... Last week we held an open discussion meeting in the spirit of the original Answer Back Meetings that Norman held, for those attending Malcolm's week on Think Globally, Acting Locally. Our Warden, Tim, gave an update of the year so far and the floor was open for all those attending to ask questions. If you are interested to hear what happened, the minutes from this meeting are available in the attached link. We plan to hold more of these meetings over the summer so please bring along any questions you will be staying here.
