From Chris, Kate and Amy Mulkern

On 11th May, we said goodbye to our mum Trish Mulkern. Trish and our dad Richard were long standing Othona members, serving for many years on the committees of both Bradwell and Burton Bradstock. Mum's funeral is on Friday 30th May, 10am, at Holy Trinity in Church Street, Churchover, Warwickshire CV23 0EW. Please email Kate_mulkern@yahoo.com if you plan on going, especially if you need accommodation advice for the night before. We will be scattering their ashes at Othona Bradwell later this year, and will say more about that soon for those who would like to attend.

Our new warden, David Jenkins, has arrived at Othona this week. It's a real pleasure to meet him and we wish him well for the future here. Here is a short piece of bio from hi:

I will leave my home in the Netherlands where I have lived for the last 13 years to come and join you in Othona. During my time in the Netherlands I have worked as a Carpenter and Teacher of Art and Design. Prior to moving to Holland I worked as Teacher for many years in Cambridgeshire and Suffolk and greatly enjoyed inspiring and working with young people. I have 3 beautiful children of my own who are now 18, 20 and 22 and ever more independent. It feels very much like my time to follow a path which feels more in tune with who I am as I turn 55.

I look forward to being of service to ... Read More

Last Weekend there was a wonderful memorial service here at Othona in St Peters Chapel for David "Dave" James, who had been part of the community for around 70 years. Over 100 people came to give thanks for his life and celebrate a life well-lived. If you were unable to make the service then you can watch it on this youtube link, which was filmed by Malcolm and Callum Hardy:

David Albert Llewellyn James ‘Dave’ passed away on Sunday 29th December, aged 83 years. In his dying Othona lost a long-standing member of the family and a beloved and dear friend. Dave passed in an ambulance on the journey to hospital, accompanied by his wife, Terry.

Dave first came to Othona in 1955, at the age of 14, just after he went blind. He said that Othona was life-changing for him, because no one ever treated him like he was blind “I had to do my chores like everyone else: whether emptying the slop bucket or washing up.” After that first experience at Othona, Dave never stopped coming, sometimes three or four times a year until very recently, when travelling became more difficult.
