Thursday 17th April - Tuesday 22nd April 2025
Space is available on this event
We start our Easter celebrations on Maundy Thursday with a Passover meal in the evening. On Friday some might like to join the congregation from Bradwell village in their procession from St Thomas Church to St-Peter-on-the-Wall Chapel, where there will be a vigil service. On Easter Sunday we will join with people from the local area for a dawn service at the Chapel, followed by a cooked breakfast back at Othona.
The concept of a landscape liturgy arises from the Good Friday tradition of the stations of the cross, though rather than culminating at the cross of Christ, we draw on the whole of God’s story, before and beyond the life of Christ.
This will be an outdoor event, a day of walking with ‘stations’ at particular points in the landscape where we stop for readings and silent reflection. Most of the content is prepared, but there is also opportunity for folk to bring and share words and sentences, or a paragraph important to themselves.
It will be weather dependent to some extent so suitable footwear and warm waterproof clothing is necessary. The walk is not difficult, mainly on level ground, beginning and finishing at The Chapel of St.Peter’s on the Wall. It is 6-7
miles in total.
Accomodation is at the Othona Community will include a brunch in the morning before gathering at St.Peter’s Chapel at 11.30am ready to leave at 12noon. Thereafter it’s out along the sea wall and beyond the old power station where we’ll take a break at the The Green Man Pub, Bradwell Waterside for a drink or a coffee, loos etc. A ride home can be arranged from there if required. The walkers will be returning via the old airfield and zig zag farm tracks, to the Chapel by dusk….hopefully!
Apart from the Saturday event, there will be opportunity to join with the rhythm of work, worship and reflection and
maybe even some kind of a knees up on the Saturday night.
Should anyone wish to join the event as a day visitor, that’s also possible, meeting at the Community reception at 11.00am would be good. There is also a small car park just a hundred yards or so before the Chapel on the approach
by East End road.
Paul Lucas – Retreat Walk Leader
Although now retired, Paul is active in church worship music leadership, and has previously worked as a self employed tree surgeon, landscaper and also for some years in Methodist Church Ministry. Resident usually in the far NW of England, beyond the Lake District near the Solway Coast, the natural landscape has always been an inspiration to him. On this retreat, we will be able share the wonders of creation and humanity’s interaction with it.
